Institute of Geophysics Polish Academy of Sciences presents workshop in Pretoria, South Africa
The Department of Geology and Natural Hazard Centre cordially invites you to a workshop. This course will introduce participants to the problem of seismicity associated with geo-resources exploitation. We will discuss different geo-resource exploitation technologies that may induce seismicity and the mechanisms of interaction between technological activity and the rock mass. We will determine the necessary conditions to identify earthquakes as induced, triggered, or natural. Participants will learn about the vital properties of anthropogenic seismicity. They will also learn what kind of scientific tools may be applied to assess the hazard they pose. Finally, they will learn about the international collaborative undertakings for research into anthropogenic seismicity. Additionally, the course will provide information concerning data typical for seismological studies in anthropogenic seismicity.
After the course, the participants will be familiar with seismic catalogues and seismic monitoring. We will discuss which information is included in a standard catalogue and how a catalogue can be used in seismic hazard analysis. Most of the below topics involve hands-on activities using the EPISODES platform EPOS Thematic Core Service Anthropogenic Hazards.
Space is limited and booking is essential: ansie.smit@up.ac.za
The workshop is co-financed by the program of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Poland, "Supporting the participation of Polish research teams in international projects research infrastructure"
