The global demand for energy and minerals requires complex industrial processes, human activities and choices to be performed under challenging environmental conditions. Such complex activities entail anthropogenic hazards, that is, the risk of human-induced hazards to the environment, people, and infrastructures. Among them, the risk of induced seismicity related to the exploration and exploitation of georesources is a growing focus and interest in science, industry, public administration, NGOs and the public.
The EPOS TCS (Thematic Core Service) for Anthropogenic Hazards (TCS-AH) provides open data through the EPISODES Platform to foster both research and training on induced seismicity and hazards related to the exploration and exploitation of georesources. With the support of various European institutions within an organised consortium, TCS-AH coordinates the integration and the access to facilities, datasets, and scientific products on anthropogenic hazards.
TCS-AH provides data on the human-induced seismicity events in the form of “episodes”. Each episode consolidates industrial and geophysical data on anthropogenic activities in a time-related fashion, thus allowing researchers to evaluate the temporal evolution of the seismic hazard parameters throughout time. Episodes are collected and organised in the EPISODES platform. Through this workspace, users can process the open access episodes, tailor the data visualisation and analysis according to their needs with custom packages, and collaborate with others.
The TCS-AH Consortium continually integrates new episodes, guaranteeing data sustainability, making them accessible through the EPOS ICS data portal. The governance and coordination of TCS-AH within the EPOS delivery framework will lay a solid groundwork for science and industry collaborations and foster aware decision-making.
Research on anthropogenic hazards requires an interdisciplinary approach. The ANTHROPOGENIC HAZARDS TCS coordinates the integration and access to facilities, datasets, and scientific products on anthropogenic hazards. Cooperating with worldwide institutions within the EPOS framework, the ANTHROPOGENIC HAZARDS TCS provides open data, software, and processing capacity on the EPISODES Platform to foster research and training on induced seismicity and hazards related to the exploration and exploitation of georesources.
TCS AH is composed of three major components:
- The TCS AH Consortium, for managing infrastructure integration in cooperation with EPOS-ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium);
- The AH e-Nodes which gather episodes with their multidisciplinary data, manage them and provide access to AH data;Data Nodes linked to the EPISODES platform, which gather episodes with their multidisciplinary data, manage them and upon request, make them available to the platform. Presently two Data Nodes are in TCS AH: CIBIS, located in Institute of Geophysics PAS in Warsaw, Poland; CDGP Data Node located in EOST Strasbourg in France;
- The EPISODES Platform (former name IS-EPOS Platform) which provides access to the episodes’ data, software, applications and computational resources for advanced analysis and visualization.
