Abstract

Unexpected seismic activity was observed near the exploration well Preese Hall (Blackpool area), coinciding with the period when this well was stimulated. Specif ically, two earthquakes were reported by the British Geological Survey (BGS): the first event of magnitude (M) 2.3 on April 1, 2011 and the second event of M 1.5 on May 27, 2011. Both events followed 2nd and 4th stages of hydraulic stimulations, respectively. These events were recorded by regional stations. In addition, temporary seismic stations were deployed in the vicinity of the Preese Hall well after the first event in order to get more detailed information about the seismic activity in the area. This report summarizes seismic activity associated with the two main events, specifically detection of weaker additional seismic events with similar character and the source mechanism of the largest events.
